Apple® today announced financial results for its fiscal 2013 second quarter ended March 30, 2013. The Company posted quarterly revenue of $43.6 billion and quarterly net profit of $9.5 billion, or $10.09 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $39.2 billion and net profit of $11.6 billion, or $12.30 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 37.5 percent compared to 47.4 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 66 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has on a number of occasions offered accurate information on Apple's product plans, recently published a new research note outlining his expectations for Apple's fifth-generation iPad. On April 28, 2013 Apple will celebrate the anniversary of its iTunes Store, and even after 10 years the company continues to lead the market in digital music downloads. According to the latest information from The NPD Group, a global information company, with a fourth quarter (Q4) 2012 unit share of the paid music download market reaching 63 percent, Apple dominated the market for paid music downloads, followed by AmazonMP3 at 22 percent. Eight out of ten digital music buyers downloaded their tracks and albums from Apple’s iTunes store in Q4 2012.

Verizon just announced its Q1 2013 financial results, which reveal positive subscriber numbers and record smartphone penetration. America's largest wireless carrier added 677,000 net new postpaid subscribers between January 1st and March 31st, up 35 percent year-over-year, and now has 98.9 million retail customers in total (including prepaid and postpaid). That works out to 34.9 retail postpaid accounts, with an average of 2.7 connections per account. Verizon also revealed that 30 percent of its accounts are on a "share everything" plan that the company introduced last July. From a financial perspective, Verizon's postpaid ARPA (average revenue per account) for the quarter was $150.27, up 6.9 percent year-over-year. Total revenue of $29.4 billion represented a 4.2 percent increase year-over-year.

When Apple introduced iCloud, it made clear its hopes to eradicate settings menus and file systems in favor of automation. If judged by my Twitter stream last week, the shutdown of Google Reader is the biggest story ever in the history of news. Of course, the reality is that Google is likely shutting down the product for a good reason: relatively few people used it, with less using it over time. More wood, fewer arrows, and all that.But that doesn’t mean this move isn’t a mistake for a couple reasons.The first is that Reader’s users, while again, relatively small in number, are hugely influential in the spread of news around the web. In a sense, Reader is the flower that allows the news bees to pollinate the social web. You know all those links you click on and re-share on Twitter and Facebook? They have to first be found somewhere, by someone. And I’d guess a lot of that discovery happens by news junkies using Reader.By killing the flower, Google could also kill the bees. That would be bad for all of us, even if we no longer use Reader or have any clue what RSS is.But the second reason worries me even more because it’s more quantifiable. By killing Reader, Google is likely to harm a lot of publishers, large and small, by eliminating a larger source of traffic.

Apple has acquired indoor-GPS company WifiSLAM, a sign that the war over indoor mobile location services is heating up.Apple paid around $20 million for the Silicon Valley-based company, according to a person familiar with the matter who said the deal closed recently.An Apple spokesman confirmed the deal saying the company “buys smaller technology companies from time to time” and generally doesn’t discuss its plans. Samsung is today officially unveiling its “Samsung Wallet” mobile app solution, and it is quickly gaining attention for similarities to Apple’s iOS 6 ticket, card, and coupon solution known as Passbook. For those familiar with Apple’s app, Samsung Wallet appears to work much the same way. The app will allow users to store event tickets, membership cards, coupons, and boarding passes in one central app. From there, users will be able to present the digital passes and companies supporting the standard can scan a barcode included for each digital ticket.

Apple agrees to settle lawsuit over in-app purchases made by children

Looks like Apple's set to put an end to the 2011 in-app purchase class action lawsuit filed on behalf of those whose children were spending a Smurphy amount of their money without account holder permission. According to the settlement, Apple could wind up giving a $5 gift certificate to upwards of 23 million customers. In matters where purchases total $30 or more, cash refunds may be awarded. The suit claims that Apple "failed to adequately disclose" the presence of in-app purchases in titles targeted at children, an issue Apple has since address by requiring passwords to be entered when making in-app purchases.
